[Book Review] Hunger Games

The Hunger Games
the Hunger Games series written by Suzanne Collins

I read all of the books from the Hunger Games series written by Suzanne Collins. The one that was exceptionally well written in comparison with the other books I read in my life was The Hunger Games, the first book of the series. The book itself was absolutely stunning, but what really shined in the book was the main character, Katniss Everdeen. She is fierce, brave, strong, and skeptical young woman from District 12, the most poor mining district, who had lost her father when she was 11, and had to deal with the harsh and mistreating world from then by herself because of her mother, who wouldn’t even lift a finger to feed and protect her children after the sudden event. Since then, she hunted for food and traded illegally with essential goods with her friend, Gale(no one can define their relationship). At the age of 16, Katniss Everdeen volunteers as a girl tribute for the Hunger Games to save her chosen loving younger sister, Prim from death. The Hunger Games is a game designed by the Capitol, who has all power and golds, and treats the district people as slaves. They made the Hunger Games to imprint the fact that to the districts that they were defeated and failed to fight for freedom. Until then, Katniss didn’t know that the unmistakable choice she made will change everything in her life, and regardless of her breakdown, there will be no going back. The boy tribute was Peeta Mellark, and the only memory Katniss has is that he is the bakery boy who intentionally burnt the bread and throwed to her(stranger) even though he knew he would get beaten by his mom. It was a big help to her since she didn’t suicide because of his generous help. After the farewells, she sets off for the Hunger Games, the entertainment for the Capitol and the pain for the districts. As the trip to Capitol starts, they meet their tutor, Haymitch, the winner of the 50th Quarter Quell Hunger Games. The Capitol made another special way to torture district people by making in a new special rule in the Hunger Games in every 25 years. In the first Quarter Quell, they made the people vote for their own tribute. In the second, the year when Haymitch won, they doubled the number of the tributes. At first, Haymitch wasn’t interested at all in teaching the survival techniques to Peeta and Katniss and lived with alcohol. But after seeing their serious attitudes, he determined that there will be a chance of winning and started to help them. After they reach the Capitol, they meet their prep team. The prep team is all covered in various colors, and they are well fed, happy, joyful, and active. In order to make Katniss pretty, they wax her and peel layers of skin off from her. Cinna, her stylist is different from the prep team. He only wears the gold eyeliner that brings out the shape of his face, and he respects Katniss. Cinna and Portia, Peeta’s stylist design a wonderful and flaming dress for Katniss and similar outfit for Peeta for the parade. The reactions from the people at the parade were miraculous. It was way better than the wealthy leading districts, District 1 and District 2, which almost never have happened before. The other tributes glared at them with anger and envy. After the successful parade, the interview was coming. Haymitch made Katniss act sassy, joyful, scary, and even sexy, but none of them worked. When the day came, Cinna told Katniss to be herself. The interview went on smoothly than she thought. Katniss twirled and twirled with her flaming dress and the crowd admired her. It was successful, but it wasn’t enough. Then Peeta suddenly said he loved Katniss. After the interview, Katniss was so mad and she choked Peeta. Haymitch explained that Peeta was doing her a favor by making her image sweet and admiring. Thus, it would also help them gain more attention.  Peeta was hurt, both his feelings and neck. After the interview, when the first training session came, Haymitch told them to go to the least popular zones like tying knots and camouflage in order to hide their real strategy, to find some allies, and to always link their fingers together. During the training, all of the tributes trained together in one place and the Gamemakers, the people who manage and make the Hunger Games, were able to see the tributes. Katniss felt sympathetic to a young girl tribute from District 11, Rue, who reminded her about Prim. They had the same naturalistic names and she was so young to be here and kill people. If she had to make an alley, she would definitely pick Rue. She was able to spot some skillful tributes. Both district 1 and 2, Foxface, and the boy tribute from District 11 like Rue. After a few training sessions, the tributes had to show their skills to the Gamemakers and get scores. 12 is the highest and 1 is the lowest. Peeta threw all kinds of heavy things and got 8. Katniss was the last tribute to get scored and she was annoyed that nobody was paying attention to her performance so she shot right into the apple in the pig’s mouth with an arrow and dismissed herself, leaving the stunned Gamemakers behind. She got an 11, the highest score between the tributes and the history. Then the start of the day came. Even though Katniss gets an instruction to never run for the pile of supplies and go straight to the woods for water, she hesitates than runs for it, risking her life. Then she runs for about good several hours before she starts to suffer from dehydration. She speaks water, knowing that Haymitch will be hearing her and give her a bottle of water. When nothing happens, she searches for water thinking he didn’t send it to her because there is water near her. When she is finally exhausted and thinks there is no hope, she lies down. Then she smells the lilies and feels the mud, then she slowly crawls for water. After that, she spends her day more running and hunting, then she tries to sleep. In the night, she wakes up because of the leading districts were walking, then she finds Peeta with them. She feels confused and betrayed, but mostly doubtful. The day went by, and there wasn’t any drama happening in the game. Then, Katniss suddenly gets attacked by the artificial fireballs. The Gamemakers wanted to kill the Katniss, the girl on fire. Then, when the fireball stops, she meets the leading districts and Peeta. They chase Katniss, then when she climbs up the tree, they decide to wait until she starves to death or climbs down. During the night, she wakes up and sees Rue on the other tree pointing to a tracker jacker hive behind her. Katniss decides to sew the branch and drop it so the leading districts can …
